COMMUNITY

open studio :: winter 2009 - 2010

Thank You Everyone!
What an amazing community gathering!
closing reception & haiti relief benefit

This event really kicked us into high gear for Haiti.
Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Art Lives Studio and White Lotus Home collaborated during the winter of 2009 to create an event, which invited you to consider the value of a truly meaningful gift of fine art, whether made by hand, produced locally or by fair trade artisans abroad, that helps provide crucial resources for communities in need.

While we were preparing for the closing reception, the earthquake hit Haiti on Jan. 12th. In response, the community of Highland Park, NJ rallied and kicked into high gear. Local artists and crafters donated more artwork to this cause and volunteered their time and resources; musicians volunteered to perform and everyone involved made the event a truly memorable gathering for all who attended.

We extend our deepest and heartfelt gratitude to all of the artists, crafters, musicians, volunteers, friends and community members who supported us in this work. A special thank you to Marlon Pando, Director of Lotus Studios Gallery and Owner of White Lotus Home, we were able to extend the exhibit a few more weeks and end with a closing reception to share all the good vibes with our growing community.

This event included our featured group show titled, "Piti Piti Plein Kay:
Small Works by Contemporary Caribbean Artists"
, "Green Gift Shop" and live music / open jam lead by The Bri-Dine Project! Our live auction has been postponed; new date(s) will be announced soon.

THE CAUSE

This event is a part of Art Lives Studio’s Haiti Relief Benefit program. Originally, our one beneficiary was Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC), a wonderful, pacifist non-profit arts organization created for education and personal growth of children (6 - 11 years) in need in Jacmel, Haiti. However, when the earthquake hit on Jan. 12th, we decided to add more organzations that are providing vital on the ground support in Haiti.

Through the generosity of artists and vendors who donated their works, volunteers, guests, friends, family and Lotus Studios Gallery, this event was able to make donations totalling $1,078 to the following organizations:

Art Creation Foundation for Children;
Doctors without Borders;
World Food Program;
Yele Haiti

Note: Several electronic donations were also made but, since not all donors contacted us, we weren't able to track them all. Therefore, the tally is higher than we originally thought.

On behalf of all the artists and green biz entrepreneurs, we thank you so much and hope that you have discovered a small treasure, which inspires and uplifts you while helping to sustain working artists in your community and beyond. There's still more art available and more coming so keep visiting our Haiti Relief collection.

Happy collecting!

FEATURED GROUP SHOW
Piti Piti Plein Kay
Small Works by Contemporary Caribbean Artists

The title of the show, "Piti Piti Plein Kay" was named by exhibiting artist, Turgo Bastien, and is a Haitian expression, which means that even a tiny light can fill an entire house. Featuring a diverse and engaging array of small works of art produced sustainably, this exhibit takes a look at how a small, thoughtful impulse, like a seed, can hold great meaning and potential to transform while sharing with viewers and collectors a snapshot of the artists' Caribbean heritage.

an exhibit catalogue will be produced and released after the show.
