REBIRTHING KISKEYA: Descendent's Work
artist's statement
Kiskeya, the original Taino name for the island presently known as Hispaniola, which makes up Haiti and the Dominican Republic, has and continues to live within politically and culturally enforced borders of strife and unconciousness between people. These works seek to confront the dividing forces with acts of love, community and coming together.
The coming together of these people in the face of those borders has been a shared longing and understanding within a growing community of artists and fellow descendents of Kiskeya's history. My hope with this collection is to help dismantle the “willie lynching” of Kiskeya with a deep understanding of our common history and heritage.
