Teaching Artist News: Youth Arts Opening Reception

Community Arts

You are cordially invited to attend the opening reception of "See Your Song, Sing Your Piece" at the Arts & Innovation Center, part of the Rowan College of South Jersey celebrating a unique exhibition of works and performance by young artists (ages 15 - 17) of Cumberland County New Jersey who participated in a seven week multidisciplinary Youth Arts Program combining visual arts, music, dance and technology. The translation of music and voice into a physical ceramic tile wall piece, for permanent installation at the Arts and Innovation Center, provides the inventive element to the program. Participating artists discussed issues they feel are important to share with their community and developed works in painting, drawing, mixed media and clay as well as installation art and conceptual pieces from which they drew symbolism to create lyrics for a collective song and choreograph movement for an original dance piece that further delivered their message.

With the support and guidance from Guest Teaching Artists, Okai Fleurimont (traditional Afro-Caribbean drummer, composer, producer, MC) Sheila Anozier (traditional Haitian dancer / choreographer, visual artist) Mike Tichy (singer/songer, multi-instrumentalist, producer) Program Technician, Randy Wilfong (3-D ceramic printing artist) Lead Teaching Artist / program coordinator, Nadïne LaFond (singer/songwriter, mixed media artist) and Director of Fine Arts and program coordinator, Jacqueline Sandro (sculptor/ceramicist) the artists built a cohesive group exhibition that shares their individual points of view including issues regarding our environment, treatment of animals, inequality, violence and Indigenous rights while staying true to their collective message of how misused power silences us all. Using rich symbolism, a variety of medium and bold expression, the young artists offer a layered and thoughtful presentation and invite the public to share in their visual and musical exposition with hopes that a healthy dialogue will begin amongst young and old a like. This is an opportunity to listen to our youth.
